Students of the United World College (UWC) in Costa Rica will be presenting the rock musical “Rent” at the Eugene O’Neill Theater of the Costa Rican North American Cultural Center.
The play will be presented March 21 at 7 p.m. and March 22 at 1 p.m.

“Rent” is a rock musical by Jonathan Larson and loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme. It was first seen in a workshop production at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1993 and eventually moved to Broadway in 1996, it ran for 12 years and 5,123 performances.

The play tells the story of a group of young artists who are struggling to survive and make a leaving in New York City’s East Village.

“Our school supports the students’ projects. Last September a group of four students from Costa Rica, Italy, Brazil and Norway put together their talents and presented their proposal for the production of “Rent”. Their main motivation is that the musical represents the challenges that youth faces and the human relations that help them overcome these challenges”, commented Leonor Gutierrez, Advancement Director of UWC to national daily La Republica.

The cast includes a total of 25 students with ages between 16 and 19, who also worked on the direction and production of the play to ensure that the same complies with the requirements of the license granted by the agency Musical Theater International of New York.

Th students started rehearsing in November and since January have been rehearsing three times a week, 3 hours each time.

Tickets will be available for purchase in the next few days through the page Teo.cr and the price is of 5 thousand colones (under $10.00), students with ID and senior citizens will pay 3 thousand colones.
