The Turrialba Volcano in Cartago continued with constant eruptions throughout this week, most of them not exceeding the 500 meters above the active crater, but according to the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI), there are at least four or five every hour lasting under one minute.

These frequent eruptions have been releasing gases and ash, and some of the ones registered this past Friday and Saturday included rocks that fell about 100 meters from the crater.

The heavy rains and weak winds present in the past days have not carried the ash far, yet there are still reports of ash fall in several close-by communities.

Poás Volcano in Alajuela, has seismic signals of volcanic tremor of moderate to high amplitude, associated to a vigorous and constant emission of water vapors and gas, neighbors in the area report a strong smell of sulfur but no ash fall. The activity is considered as normal by the experts and the last eruption registered was on April 22. The volcano presents substantial changes in the interior of the active crater with the formation of two emission points where sediment has been accumulating in time. The water level of the lake has also lowered considerably.

Rincón de la Vieja in Guanacaste has continued to register small phreatic eruptions since May 23 and there are also variations in the level of the lake when compared to February.
