US ambassador in Costa Rica Stafford Fitzgerald Haney said goodbye through the Embassy’s Facebook page in his last day in this position.
“Representing my nation in this beautiful country has been one of the greatest honors of my life, since my arrival in June of 2015 and to date. I am still amazed by the strong relationship between both countries and the warmth and hospitality that Costa Rica has demonstrated to me and my family. In my trips throughout the entire country, from Upala to Talamanca, from the Osa Peninsula all the way to Tortuguero, I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many impressive people, people that represent Costa Rica’s greatest asset, it’s human talent. I met amazing students all around the country; talented young entrepreneurs. It has been an honor to work with the government and the different actors of the civil society to contribute with the development of the abilities of ticos in all aspects of life. We worked with the Ministry of Education in the new English teaching program that was implemented just a few months ago, we visited the native indigenous communities and formed new links with their community. I am also very proud of our work and contribution with the Costa Rican police through the donation of equipment and training …”, this was just part of the speech of ambassador Haney, in which he enlisted some of the achievements during his term and who also emphasized that the United States continues to be the main source of foreign investment for Costa Rica and Costa Rica continues to be an important tourism destination for Americans.
Gratitude and farewell messages from Costa Rica’s President Luis Guillermo Solís as well as several Ministers and government officials were also posted in a video on the Embassy’s Facebook page and in a ceremony the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel González Sanz, presented now former ambassador Haney with the honor award of the Juan Mora Fernández National Order in the “Gran Cruz Placa de Plata” rank, a distinction given to foreign personalities as a recognition of their services to the country.
Haney confirmed in an interview with La Nación that he will stay with his family in Costa Rica for the time being.
Republican leader from Florida, Sharon Day will replace Haney in Costa Rica; she was recently named in this position by President Donald Trump and will become the 59th ambassador of the United States in Costa Rica.
