US Embassy in Costa RIca Alerts: On Monday, July 1, 2019, the U.S. Embassy received credible open source information that student protestors and trade unions will continue to protest against government politics with a new focus on the resignation of Finance Minister Rocio Aguilar. In addition to these demonstrations, protestors continue to block main roadways throughout the country, reportedly to express opposition to upcoming taxation and other policy issues.

The Institute of Costa Rican Tourism (ICT) has set up a toll-free hotline for tourists and residents to report road closures and delays due to the protests. You can contact 1-800-TURISMO (1-800-887-4766) or send a message via What’s App to 8628-3247. Please remember to call 911 in the event of an emergency situation.

The Embassy will update the Citizen Liaison Community if any significant changes occur to the above information.

Actions to take:
• Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations, even if they appear peaceful.
• Avoid large gatherings and rallying points for demonstrations.
• Do not attempt to approach or drive through road blocks or crowds of demonstrators.
• Monitor media for updates.
