Will the Discovery Costa Rica Project Actually Become a Reality?

The construction of the project Discovery Costa Rica was set to begin this 2018 and was supposed to open its first stage by 2020, according to the announcement made back in April 2017; however, to date, there are many doubts regarding whether or not Discovery Costa Rica will actually become a reality.

Julio Viales, Mayor of Liberia, affirmed in an interview with El Financiero, that currently there are no permits or documents in process for Discovery Costa Rica, he even goes as far as stating that the Government “made a premature announcement” and he considers there were not enough elements to see this as a reality since he only received the visit of two women, two weeks before the announcement was made last year, with a presentation on what they planned to do and material that seemed “promotional” more than anything else.

This situation is not new, and in fact The Costa Rica Star reported on the problems back in August 2017, when local company Sun Latin America stated through a press release that the project was still in a process of “discussion and clarification of legal aspects between the associates”, “We are currently undergoing conversations which we cannot give details on out of respect. We guarantee the professionalism of our company as a developer and our commitment on carrying out this project”, said Tom Turner, president of Sun Latin America back then.

Regarding this situation Costa Rica’s Vice-President, Ana Helena Chacón had stated that the project was still going to happen and that some aspects were being discussed among the private entities involved; yet, 5 months have gone by and it seems that the situation has not changed.

The total investment estimated for this project is considered in over $1 billion USD, with an initial $400 million allocated for the first stage.
