A Costa Rican woman of last names Mora Sibaja was arrested in Perez Zeledon, Costa Rica under charges of Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling.
According to the investigation which began in 2016, the woman charged between US$8,000.00 to US$10,000.00 to smuggle people to the United States through different routes; Mora would receive 50% of the payment in Costa Rica and the balance was paid before crossing the border to the USA.
The majority of her clients were from the area of Perez Zeledon, the police stated that Mora had been operating as a “coyote” (term used for those who smuggle people illegally across borders) for several years but they don’t have the exact number of people she has helped illegally across borders.
The woman apparently had a partner in Mexico where she used to spend a lot of time.
“The investigation demonstrated that the “coyote” would smuggle Costa Rican citizens to Mexico through air or ground transportation or would guide them in the process of getting tickets to travel to this country. Once in Mexico, Mora Sibaja would contact members of the criminal organization who would take care, along with the suspect, of providing everything necessary to move the Costa Rican immigrants to the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, a place near the USA border. They would accommodate them in storage facilities several days while they coordinated everything for their illegal entry to the USA”, explained the Costa Rica Migratory Police through a press release, and added “This area (Perez Zeledon) is very vulnerable to this type of criminal activity, several organizations have been detected here related to human trafficking and smuggling. They have similar operations but they act separately”.
Mora will discount three months of preventive imprisonment while she awaits trial.
Back in November the Migratory Police captured members of a criminal group who also operated in Perez Zeledon and charged a similar amount as smuggling fees.
In many of these cases the victims never make it to the United States, and family members raise the alert.
